NewBCamp provided an opportunity for relative newcomers to social media (things like blogs, podcasts, social bookmarking, social networking, etc.) to get their feet wet, explore, and learn in a welcoming, encouraging environment.

Design vs Usability

So your site design looks cool as hell. Big deal.
  • Is the type legible?
Can users still set the type size?
Did you force fonts that users won't have?
Did you hide any links in the snazzy Flash navigation?
Can users set bookmarks on internal pages?

Nowhere is it written that a website with high usability can't be good looking. But you can get yourself into trouble if you put the cart before the horse.

Bottom line: websites are for using, not for looking at.

This session will discuss fundamental concepts in usability and graphic design. Then our group discussion will shed light on how these factors affect actual user experience.
